The Fox Along the Path

Some encounters last only seconds and alter the whole walk that follows.

A dark Algarve landscape beneath stars

There is a particular kind of attention that arrives when a wild animal crosses your path. The conversation stops. The body becomes still. For a few seconds, looking is the only thing happening.

The fox does not belong to the walk in the way a destination does. It cannot be scheduled or repeated. It appears, reads the situation and is gone again, leaving the landscape apparently unchanged and your experience of it completely different.

Encounters like this resist possession. A photograph is often too late. A story is all that comes home. Even then, the most important part may be what cannot be described: the alertness, the mutual distance, the feeling of having briefly entered another creature’s world.

Songlines has always made room for these meetings. Not as symbols assigned in advance, but as moments that ask for attention. A feather, a track, an animal at dusk: each carries its own life before it carries meaning for us.

The fox along the path is a reminder to keep looking without demanding. The land is not a backdrop. We are walking through a place already full of other lives.
