Story 04 · Algarve

A Bridge Forgotten by Time

Old paths remain in the landscape long after their original purpose has faded.

An old stone bridge surrounded by wild plants

Across the Algarve, older routes sit quietly beside the roads that replaced them. A line of stone disappears into scrub. A track continues after the map has stopped naming it. A bridge still holds its shape, although almost nobody needs to cross there now.

Places like this make time visible. The stones remember weight: feet, animals, baskets, journeys made before speed became the measure of usefulness. What remains is not a monument polished for viewing, but something more intimate, work made by hands, weathered into the land.

To stand there is to feel how much daily life has changed, and how much has not. People still need ways across. We still follow paths made by those before us, often without knowing whose labour first made the passage possible.

A weathered stone arch and steps overgrown with plants

The old bridge asks for no return to an imagined past. It asks only that we notice continuity. Materials age. Purposes change. Care leaves traces.

This is close to the heart of Songlines: making for use, allowing time to remain visible and understanding that an object can carry a story without becoming too precious to touch.
